Artist Statement

Metal is seductive, it moves slowly, needs to be coaxed – teased into shape. Makes me feel strong – empowered. Like I am in control in a world that cannot be controlled. Pattern and repetition are the structure that grounds me.

My work seems simple; minimalistic even. It is about absence. All that encumbers, superfluous stripped away until nothing remains but bare essence. It is in that raw, exposed state that all possibilities are revealed, and we find our truest selves.

Biography

Melanie Archer graduated from the Alberta College of Art + Design with honours in 2014. After working under Shona Rae at The Blackboard Gallery for three years she established her own studio in Calgary in 2020. You can currently find her work at The Glenbow gift shop and the Alberta Craft Council in Calgary and Edmonton.
